In a world where mental health issues are increasingly recognized but still inadequately addressed, Mohammed shehzad ibrahim is a beacon of hope and determination. At 36, this seasoned professional with a background in banking and real estate is turning personal struggles into a force for good. Inspired by his parents’ global charity work and driven by his own experiences, Mohammed shehzad ibrahim is committed to enhancing mental health awareness and support within his community.
Can you tell us about your personal journey with mental health and how it has influenced your current advocacy efforts?
My journey with mental health has been challenging. It took me over six months to get an appointment with a doctor, and even then, I was turned down for a referral to a specialist. The wait times within the NHS can extend to two years, which is unacceptable. I had to pay privately for the care I needed, despite being a higher-rate taxpayer contributing 40% of my salary towards government spending. This experience has made me deeply frustrated with the current system and motivated me to advocate for better mental health services.
How does your background and cultural context shape your approach to mental health advocacy?
Coming from an Asian background, mental health is often seen as a taboo subject in our homes. This made seeking help even more difficult for me. However, I believe that breaking these cultural barriers is essential for progress. Inspired by my parents’ extensive charity work worldwide, I want to continue their legacy in a way that addresses mental health issues head-on. My goal is to enhance people’s understanding of mental health, provide them with effective tools, and offer practical solutions to the challenges they face.
Can you share more about your vision for promoting mental health within your local community?
My vision is to create a platform that not only raises awareness about mental health but also equips individuals with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their mental well-being. Similar to how my brother is building a legacy through cycling initiatives like “Brother on Bike” and “Gapped Cycling,” which encourage physical health and community engagement, I aim to develop a legacy focused on mental health. I believe that with the right support and guidance, we can make a significant impact.
What kind of support are you seeking, and how can others get involved in your mission?
I am seeking support from like-minded individuals and organizations who share my vision for improving mental health services and awareness. Whether through collaboration, sponsorship, or volunteering, every bit of support helps. I am eager to discuss my ideas in greater detail and explore how we can work together to create meaningful change.
